Department of Information Systems and Computing - Research Centres

The Department of Information Systems and Computing is an internationally recognised centre of excellence in biological and healthcare informatics, human-computer interaction, information science, information systems, intelligent data analysis, and software engineering.

We are ranked top in the UK for 'Research Power' and we are by far the largest research grouping in the area (RAE 2008). We are proud of our achievements, the journals that we edit and the honorary appointments and visiting academics that the Department attracts.

The Department is home to three University Research Centres and two University Interdisciplinary Research Centres. These centres interact closely, and together they conduct leading research into the exploitation, development and use of advanced information technologies by individuals within organisations and society.

Centre for Intelligent Data Analysis

Intelligent Data Analysis is an interdisciplinary study concerned with the effective analysis of data and our research is directed at four key areas: Biomedical Informatics, Systems and Synthetic Biology; Data Mining and Intelligent Systems; Dynamics, Signals and Time Series; Visual Computing.

Centre for Information and Knowledge Management

The Centre for Information and Knowledge Management is a multidisciplinary research centre that is concerned with the derivation and use of knowledge in the context of Information Systems. Our research has a major impact and we frequently publish in the top journals and at conferences.

People and Interactivity (PANDI) Research Centre

The People and Interactivity Research Centre conducts research into Human Computer Interaction with an emphasis on user interface design - making systems easier for people to use. Our interests broadly cover information visualisation, virtual environments, ubiquitous and mobile computing, design for diverse user groups, and multimedia.

Centre for Information Systems Research

Information Systems is a central and well-established research area in the department, indeed, it is one of the leading groups nationally and internationally, and the University has recognised this by establishing the Centre for Information Systems Research. CISR has a flourishing PhD programme, and a track record of large grants.

The Centre for Systems and Synthetic Biology

The Centre for Systems and Synthetic Biology creates the interdisciplinary environment necessary to bring together expertise from computing, mathematics, engineering and biosciences, and is a joint enterprise between the School of Information Systems, Computing and Mathematics and the School of Health Sciences and Social Care. Systems biology is concerned with the complex outcomes and properties that living systems have due to the interactions, structure, and coordination of their component parts. Synthetic Biology seeks to design, modify and build new living systems in a rational manner.
