People and Interactivity (PANDI) Research Centre

People and Interactivity is one of the largest research groups conducting Human Computer Interaction (HCI) research in the UK.

PANDI’s core research lies in the analysis and design of interactive systems. Our interests broadly cover information visualisation, virtual environments, ubiquitous and mobile computing, design for diverse user groups, and multimedia.

Members hold editorships of major journals, with Macredie as editor of Virtual Reality. Other members have edited special issues in key journals, including ACM Transactions on Computer-Human Interaction, IEEE Multimedia, ACM Transactions on Multimedia Computing, Communications and Applications, and IEEE Transactions on Broadcasting. Members have served on research funding panels (eg Norwegian Research Council, AHRC) and conference committees (eg ACM CHI, BCS HCI, European Association of Cognitive Ergonomics).

User-Centred Design

The core research in this group involves the design and use of interactive systems. Key themes within this involve examining the role of individual differences and developing systems requirements for widening information access.

Multimedia and Visualisation

The group explores and develops techniques to enhance users’ interaction with multimedia systems (for example, through semantic content modelling or perceptual multimedia quality) and in promoting information discovery through novel methods of visual representation (for example, through spatial-semantic visualisation and virtual reality).
