Department of Mathematical Sciences - Research Activity
We are a large research active department with a significant number of PhD students. Within Applied Mathematics we have a significant research presence in Applied Analysis; Computational Mathematics; Continuum Mechanics and Mathematical Physics. We also have an active group working in Statistics and Operational Research.
The Department of Mathematical Sciences achieved excellent results in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) with nearly 60% of the research in the department rated ‘World Leading’ or ‘Internationally Excellent’. Within the London area Statistics and Operational Research was rated as the second best research department (equal to the London School of Economics, second to Imperial College). While Applied Mathematics was rated as the third best research department (behind Kings College and Imperial College).
The department is home to three research centres and seven research groups. Use the links below to find out more about our research activity.
The School is home to two of the UK’s highly-rated departments - Information Systems and Computing, and Mathematical Sciences. It has a large and thriving student population of over 1500 students, supported by over 70 academic staff.
The School hosts eight research centres and is a world-class centre of excellence for interdisciplinary research involving applied and computational mathematics, biological and healthcare informatics, human-computer interaction, information systems, intelligent data analysis, mathematical physics, software engineering, statistics and operational research.
Research Centres
-
BICOM
Brunel Institute of Computational Mathematics - specialising in the theory and application of finite element methods.
-
Brunel University Random Systems Research Centre - specialising in the study of random phenomena.
-
Centre for the Analysis of Risk and Optimisation Modelling Applications - focusing on risk and optimisation, especially in the field of finance. Members of the group engage in a significant amount of research. Much of this research is reported in the academic research literature. More details as to the work done can be found via pages associated with individual members of the group.
CSSB
The Centre for Systems and Synthetic Biology creates the interdisciplinary environment necessary to bring together expertise from computing, mathematics, engineering and biosciences, and is a joint enterprise between the School of Information Systems, Computing and Mathematics and the School of Health Sciences and Social Care. Systems biology is concerned with the complex outcomes and properties that living systems have due to the interactions, structure, and coordination of their component parts. Synthetic Biology seeks to design, modify and build new living systems in a rational manner.
