A recent report written by Brunel’s Placement and Careers Centre has found that graduates who have undertaken a professional placement will on average find employment more rapidly and earn more as their starting salary than their peers from three-year courses.*

The average salary for 2010 Brunel sandwich course leavers was £22,480 compared to £18,068 for leavers from full-time courses, giving sandwich students a salary premium of over £4,400. The salaries of non-placement students have by contrast seen a three year decline, largely because six months after leaving university graduates without relevant work experience are more likely to be in ‘stop gap’ jobs. One recent survey of The Times Top 100 recruiters showed that two thirds reported that graduates had ‘little or no chance’ of receiving an employment offer without previous experience.

Brunel graduates who have done sandwich placements are also more likely get jobs in top three Standard Occupation Codes (Managers and Senior Officials, Professional Occupations and Associated Professional and Technical). Increasingly they are also reporting that their degree is required for the job they are doing or gave them an advantage.
