Seminar series: Reframing Personalisation

Join our next social work seminar series with Dr. Maryam Zonouzi from Ginger Giraffe Cooperative.

Abstract:

Disability theory has without exception exerted the primacy of independence and the need to challenge oppression by wresting power from a disabling society. This approach relies on a particular conceptualisation of independence, emancipation and empowerment, which has become the dominant discourse. The resulting unchallenged consensus has led to numerous social policies, particularly Self-Directed Support (SDS), applying these principles. While there has been much research on technical aspects of these policies, there remains little research on the conceptual underpinnings on which they rely. This presentation attempts to fill this knowledge gap.
