Becoming a Reflective English Teacher
June saw the launch of Dr Andrew Green’s new edited book entitled Becoming a Reflective English Teacher that is published by the Open University Press. The senior lecturer in Education is a prolific author with nine previous books to his name in addition to a series of book chapters. The new book takes a wide-ranging approach to professionalism and practice in the teaching of English, and provides detailed insight into a range of educational theories underpinning these.
The issue of professional reflection is a particular focus of the book, and this is explored from both a practical and theoretical standpoint. Becoming a Reflective Teacher has been described by Andrey Rosowsky, the Director of Initial Teacher Education at the University of Sheffield, as a “timely and valuable textbook that will be of enormous help to students and trainee teachers on a variety of courses and routes into the English teaching profession”. The nature of the materials in this book, however, makes it suitable not only for students involved in their Initial Teacher Education, but also for teachers of English through the early stages of their careers.
The book addresses a wide range of professional, practical and academic needs, providing critical perspectives on the evolving discipline of English and its various school manifestations. It provides insight into key historical, sociological, political, philosophical and academic perspectives on the development English as a subject, encouraging teachers to explore in depth their own relationship with the discipline and how they wish to work with it in the school context.
Andrew Green taught English in a variety of schools in Oxfordshire and London, and served as Head of English at Ewell Castle School in Surrey before taking up his current post at Brunel University, where he is the programme leader for Secondary English. His research interests include topics such as English pedagogy, the role of creative writing in English, English in Higher Education, the teaching of English post-16 and issues surrounding the transition between post-16 and Higher Education English.
