About Anne
Anne Chappell studied Education, Physical Education and Science at West Sussex Institute of Higher Education, before completing a Masters in Education at the University of Southampton. She joined Brunel University in January 2004 from a background in secondary teaching in several local authorities, with roles including Head of Year and Head of Physical Education. She leads and teaches on the PGCert Secondary Physical Education (with QTS) course; as well as teaching on the BSc Secondary Education and Physical Education (with QTS), BSc Secondary Education and Physical Education, BA Contemporary Education and Masters courses.

- Learners and learning;
- Learning and teaching;
- Safeguarding, health and safety and safe practice in education and physical education;
- Status of physical education and physical educators;
- Pupil experiences and perceptions of education and physical education;
- Inclusion and intersectionality;
- Primary physical education and the ‘skilling’ of generalist teachers;
- ‘Practical’ subject experience covers all areas of activity but with particular interests in dance, health related exercise, athletics and examination physical education.
External Project:
Ministry of Education in Cyprus: project to enhance the delivery of Physical Education through a continuing professional development programme for 180 generalist primary school teachers in Cyprus.Research Interests
Research Interests
Anne is currently exploring the way in which professional learning is understood and experienced by teachers, and the meaning they attribute to those experiences. A narrative approach is being taken.

- Exploration of black and minority ethnic students’ experiences of physical education teacher education supported by a Recruitment and Retention Challenge Grant from the Training and Development Agency (TDA) led by Leeds Metropolitan University in 2008 to 2009.
