Research Degrees - MPhil, PhD and EdD

Our School offers a vibrant, dynamic, productive and supportive environment in which you can undertake your research degree studies. Our central aim is to enable you to undertake independent high-level research which is both rigorous and original. Not only will you be exposed to professional research guidance, you will also be encourages to present your work within and outside of the University. Our School comprises a stimulating mix of young researchers (staff and students) working alongside more experienced colleagues. A number of networking, developmental and presentation events are organized during the year. Our expectation is that you attend as many of these as possible.

You can apply to study on a full time or part time basis for a research-led Master of Philosophy (MPhil) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in either an Education or Sports Science related field of research.  We also offer a full time or part time Professional Doctorate in Education (EdD)

You can register for your MPhil or PhD degree on the first day of any month during the academic year.  The EdD has an October intake.

Aims

After graduating from this course, you will have:

  • Gained knowledge and expertise in a specialist field at the forefront of your chosen profession;
  • Developed a broad range of research and enquiry skills
  • Been able to take your new skills, ideas and original research back to your workplace or use them to help you move into new roles

In addition to a completed on-line application form, we will require a research proposal, two references and a copy of your highest degree certificates.

Subject to meeting our entry requirements, you will be invited to interview. During interview, you will have the opportunity to discuss your proposed research, academic achievements and experience.

Assessment

In accordance with University regulations, you will be required to defend your thesis at viva voce examination.

Our School shares the University emphasis on maintaining completion rates in line with that required by the research councils. You will be encouraged to submit your thesis for viva voce examination within the normal registration periods published by the University, although it is recognized this is not always possible. These are currently:

· For full time students: 36 months from the date of registration

· For part time students: 48 months from the date of registration

Entry requirements

You must have a good first degree (upper second or first) in an Education or Sports Science related discipline and preferably hold a relevant Master’s degree obtained from a UK university or overseas equivalent.

Applicants whose first language is not English must demonstrate competence in English language to a minimum overall score (for reading, writing and speaking) of IELTS Level 7.0 or equivalent.
