On Wednesday 16 November 2011, BC•SHaW hosted a vibrant and well-attended conference for youth sport researchers, policymakers and practitioners on Researching Youth Sport, Health and Wellbeing in challenging times. Highlights included keynote presentations by internationally renowned academics sport psychologist Professor Joan Duda of Birmingham University, sociologist of sport Professor Tim Crabbe of Substance, and physical activity specialist Dr. Trish Gorely of Loughborough University. The event also featured an innovative panel presentation by national sport agencies StreetGames, British Federation of Disability Sports, Sporting Equals and the Women’s Sport and Fitness Foundation, who described their work in addressing diversity and inclusion in sport, and the role research plays in informing it. The BASES Paediatric Exercise Sciences group also hosted a high quality parallel stream within the afternoon programme.

There was a prominent Brunel presence throughout the day, and we were especially delighted to have
the work of our Masters students featuring in well received presentations by Brunel academics. The
support of an excellent team of undergraduate student volunteers, with additional assistance from
our postgraduate students before and throughout the conference, ensured that all ran smoothly on the
day. The conference is the sixth in a national series shared with Loughborough University – number eight will be back at Brunel in 2013!
