About Costas

Dr Costas Karageorghis is a reader in sport psychology and has an international reputation for his research into the psychological, psychophysical and ergogenic effects of music. He is the author of 65 peer-reviewed and 90 professional articles in sport and exercise psychology. Costas has made 100 conference presentations and given numerous invited presentations at national and international conferences, including six keynote speeches. He has also delivered five public lectures in recent years. His music research has been featured in newspapers around the world; most recently in the Times, Independent, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post and Sydney Morning Herald. In 2011 he was the recipient of the Sportesse Award for Exercise Sciences at the annual conference of the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences. The award was for new theoretical work in the area of music and physical activity.

Costas is a chartered member of the British Psychological Society and a double-accredited member of BASES (psychology research and scientific support). In September 2010 he was elected a Fellow of BASES for his services to sport and exercise sciences in the UK. In September 2013 he was awarded Chartered Scientist status by the Science Council. Costas acts as consultant psychologist to a number of international and professional athletes and has worked with a wide variety of UK governing bodies of sport (e.g. UK Athletics, British Canoe Union, British Water Ski Federation and England Hockey). He has also worked with many companies in the sports world and music industry.

From 2007-11 Costas was head coach of the Great Britain Students athletics team. He has also managed and coached the Brunel University Athletics Team since the early 90s. During this time, the team have won seven British Universities championships including the 2010 women’s national indoor championship. In 2004 he was made Honorary Life President of Brunel University Athletics Club and, in 2008, Vice-President of Blackheath and Bromley Harriers Athletics Club.

In his spare time, Costas enjoys playing the piano and often performs in a jazz trio with vocalist Ruby Lee Ryder and trumpeter John Buckley.

Research Interests

Research Interests

Costas’s main research interest is the psychological, psychophysical and ergogenic effects of music in the domain of sport and exercise. This is a topic that he has examined systematically for over 20 years using a broad range of scientific approaches and methodologies. His programme of research has entailed the development of conceptual frameworks and grounded theory, the production and validation of measurement tools, laboratory-based experimentation (e.g. psychometric, EEG, fMRI, respiratory), and in vivo studies.

Costas has completed a number of industrial projects that include work with Nike Inc. on the Portable Sport Audio MP3 player, Sony UK on the W series of sport MP3 headphones, Bio-Medical Research Ltd. (Ireland) on the Mentor behavioural screening programme and David Lloyd Leisure Ltd on the development of a music policy for their chain of health clubs. He was principal author of the recent British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences’ (BASES) national expert statement on the use of music in exercise.

From 2007-10 Costas led a large-scale consultancy project with the International Management Group (IMG) that entailed coordinating live music with mass participation running events – Run to the Beat. He made scientific contributions and served as a media spokesperson for several events in the UK and across mainland Europe. Most recently he has been working with Redbull UK Ltd. on the Performance Track Project  that entailed the creation of a bespoke pre-competition track for Olympic 400-metre hurdler Dai Green. The project involved a collaboration with the well-known producer Redlight.

Costas has worked extensively with the music industry to release a number of sport and exercise-related compilations including the bestselling Run to the Beat CD and Ministry of Sound: Run to the Beat 2010. He recently completed a textbook entitled Inside Sport Psychology (Human Kinetics 2011) that is co-authored by Prof Peter Terry (University of Southern Queensland). This is the first book to cover music-related psychological interventions in sport.

Costas contributed three chapters to the text Sporting Sounds: Relationships Between Sport and Music (Routledge 2009) as well as chapters in New Sport and Exercise Psychology Companion (Fitness Information Technology 2011), Sport and Exercise Psychology (Hodder Education 2014) and Sport, Music, Identities (Taylor & Francis 2014). He is currently writing a second textbook for Human Kinetics that addresses the topic of music-related interventions for exercise and sport professionals.

Costas’s PhD graduates include: Drs David-Lee Priest (2004; Author and P-T Lecturer at University of East Anglia), Kelly J. Ashford (2005; Deputy Head of School, Teaching & Learning, Brunel), Ruth M. Hewston (2005; Senior Lecturer at University of Worcester), Daniel T. Bishop (2007; Lecturer at Brunel), Georgios Loizou (2008; Diplomat for Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Republic of Cyprus), Massimo M. Vencato (2010; Freelance Consultant and P-T Lecturer at Brunel), Harry Lim (2012; Sport Psychologist at Singapore Sports Institute), Alessandra Mecozzi Saha (2013; Registered Psychologist in Australia) and Leighton Jones (2014; Postdoc at Brunel).
