About Daniel

Daniel is a Chartered Psychologist. His work has been presented at a range of international conferences and has been featured in leading journals. His research has been featured on BBC News and on BBC Radio 4 as well as in the Guardian Newspaper and the Community Care magazine. It has also appeared in briefing papers and the newsletter, Relay, published by the NSPCC’s Child Protection in Sport Unit (CPSU). Daniel was also awarded the Sport Psychology Research Prize ($500) by the Canadian Sports Centre, Manitoba in 2008.

Daniel leads the Brunel International Research Network for Athlete Welfare (BIRNAW). He is a member of the CPSU’s Research Evidence and Advisory Group and is also an adjunct Professor at the University of Regina, Canada.

Daniel joined Brunel University as a Lecturer in Youth Sport in September 2008. He has been awarded a PGCHE (Brunel University, July 2010), PhD (Loughborough University, October 2008), MSc in Applied Psychology (Cranfield University, October, 2002) and a BSc in Social Psychology (Loughborough University, July, 2000).

Research Interests

Research Interests

Daniel’s main research focuses on understanding the development and maintenance of (un)healthy and (in)effective relationships in sport. This relates to all of the key stakeholders including athletes/players, coaches, referees and parents. It is intended that this research informs policy and practice to promote the welfare of everyone involved and safeguard people with additional vulnerability in sport.

  • Preventing sexual harassment and abuse in sport (European Commission)
  • Understanding player wellbeing in elite junior tennis (International Tennis Federation)
  • Developing a child protection in sport system in Japan (Daiwa Foundation)
