Dr Matthew Rablen has been awarded £213,000 as part of the prestigious ESRC Research Leaders of the Future scheme. The Brunel lecturer from the Department of Economics and Finance will investigate the optimal design of a portfolio of audit interventions for a tax authority.

    International Responses to Piracy Workshop at Leading Institute

    Dr Anja Shortland and Dr Matthew Rablen will be presenting their joint research on ransom negotiations with Somali pirates on 25th September. The research workshop based at The International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) will be presented to an audience of naval commanders, diplomats and private sector representatives.

    Dr Jan Fidrmuc discusses recent economic turmoil in Greece

    As the Greek economic crisis continues, recent research conducted by Dr Jan Fidrmuc questions whether the EU’s approach to Greece – to enforce austerity measures and reform over a long period - is the right one. Short-term costs may be avoided by bailout support, but this may have the effect of discouraging reform and thereby undermine return to prosperity in the long-term.

    Dr Jan Fidrmuc’s views were given as part of the Economists’ forum in The FT online.
