Personal Biography
I completed my PhD on socialist economics in 1979. I then worked at University College, Cardiff, before moving to Swansea University, where I became Professor, and then Head of Department. I have held one-year visiting posts at Washington University (St Louis) and Queens' University, Kingston, Ontario. I am the author of The Economic Theory of Central Planning (Blackwell, 1989), and I have published widely in journals including American Economic Review, Bell (Rand) Journal of Economics, European Economic Review, Journal of the European Economic Association, Journal of Money, Credit and Banking, and Journal of Public Economics.Research
Research Overview
I am an applied economic theorist. Currently, my main research interest is in informality (economic activity that is not registered with the authorities, e.g., for tax purposes) in developing and transition economies. This overlaps with an interest in small firms in such economies. I am involved in joint work with specialists on Russia, Georgia and Senegal. I currently have a secondary interest in issues relating to privatization, public-private partnerships and public infrastructure.
