Head of School to review party finance legislation of Georgia
Professor Justin Fisher, Head of School, has been awarded a contract by the Council of Europe to review and make recommendations for changes in the party finance legislation of Georgia. He was commissioned by the Council of Europe to conduct this study following a request by Georgia’s Ministry of Justice.
He was in Tbilisi last week meeting officials and ministers from the Ministry of Justice, representatives from the political parties and NGOs, and is currently producing a draft report with his recommendations. Following this successful visit, he will be returning to Georgia in May and June to discuss and finalise his findings.
Professor Fisher was delighted with the outcome of the visit and commented: “This was a fascinating and hugely worthwhile visit. There is no ‘one size fits all’ approach to party finance, and it was essential to meet and discuss options with as many stakeholders as possible. I’m looking forward to presenting my recommendations and I hope that these will help improve practice in Georgian elections”.
