Mandate - Why BCISS?
Few would doubt the wisdom of establishing a university centre dedicated to the study of intelligence and security issues in an objective and non-partisan manner.Threats to international security and the management of intelligence inputs into policy-making are not just an increasingly important area of academic study but have since 9/11 and 7/7 been the attention of ever-growing public concern.
BCISS believes that good intelligence and security agencies are vital if liberal democracies are to remain strong and robust in a threatening and fissile global environment.
Reflecting the real need to understand and learn from an analysis of security and intelligence issues at a practical level, BCISS exists to research key aspects of intelligence and security questions, publish its findings widely and promote teaching and further research in the field.
BCISS supports work on present and future issues as well as historical analyses of past intelligence and security questions.
The media regards BCISS as a convenient, impartial and highly authoritative point of contact for questions which fall into its areas of expertise.
BCISS also undertakes commissioned research for a range of organisations, both public and private.
