Research and Taught Degrees

BCISS runs active research degree programmes for students wishing to undertake advanced research projects on intelligence policy.

Research students at BCISS are members of the BCISS research team, working on major BCISS policy and consultancy projects, and are centrally involved in all of the Centre's activities at home and abroad. Research students also participate in the Centre's annual Analytical Simulation Exercise in the University's second term.

BCISS provides research students full access to its resources and networks of contacts in support of their research and longer-term career plans, and actively encourages researchers to publish their work in academic and professional spheres.

MA Course

The Intelligence and Security Studies MA is the flagship MA associated with BCISS. The degree combines state of the art academic training in intelligence and security issues with Brunel University's traditional 'praxis-oriented' approach derived from the applied sciences that were the University's original forte. The one-year taught programme emphasises intelligence management, policy and analytical skills grounded in a strong historical study of intelligence and international security.

Normally, a first degree of 2.1 or higher is required for those coming to the course from an undergraduate degree.  We accept applications from all types of first degrees.  Those who have been out of schooling for some period of time, or do not have first degrees, may apply to the course if they can show sufficient professional experience and training over their careers--each case is considered on its own merits.  Experience in the military, police, or other government department is especially, but not exclusively, valued.

Please note that all applicants to BCISS programmes are interviewed in person or by telephone.
