High profile schizophrenia research published by professor and graduate
Former Brunel Psychology undergraduate, Philip Erritty, and Brunel Psychology professor, Taeko Wydell, have recently published illuminating new findings about the recognisability of schizophrenia symptoms in the journal PLoS ONE.
This is one of many influential research studies currently taking place within the Department of Psychology and demonstrates the excellent research opportunities available to Brunel Psychology students.
Philip commented: "I chose to study Psychology at Brunel for its unique placement opportunities, and graduated with a first in Psychology in 2011."
He completed his first placement at the Institute of Psychiatry in London as a research assistant and for his second placement he worked as a Therapeutic Care Worker in a psychiatric rehabilitation hospital.
Philip worked alongside clinical psychologists, experienced nurses and psychiatrists in the 24-hour care of vulnerable adults with mental health problems at the hospital was an extremely fulfilling experience. Through his two placements he developed a keen interest in schizophrenia, and subsequently chose to investigate lay perceptions of the disorder for his dissertation.
He continued: "With the support of my dissertation supervisor, Professor Taeko Wydell, I have since managed to get my dissertation project published in the science journal, PLoS ONE. I plan to develop my career in clinical psychology/psychiatry and have been working toward this goal.”
