The first event in the Women in Neuroscience Seminar Series, organised by the Brunel Centre for Cognition and Neuroimaging (CCNI)

The series will be celebrating the achievements and contributions of women to Neuroscience and inspiring a new generation of neuroscientists.

This seminar will be delivered by Prof Barbara Sahakian and will be introduced by the VC Prof Julia Buckingham. The title of Prof Sahakian's talk will be:

"Neuropsychiatry in the 21st Century: Biomarkers and Cognitive Enhancement"

Professor Sahakian will try to illustrate her role as a leader in the area of neuroscience and mental health research and policy. She will focus on her motivation and achievements in her scientific research, training of PhD students, and applied inventions such as the CANTAB neuropsychological computerised tests. She will also attempt to highlight the rewarding aspects of and the personal traits she has found to be promotive for being a successful woman in neuroscience.

Barbara J. Sahakian FMedSci is Professor of Clinical Neuropsychology at the Department of Psychiatry and MRC/Wellcome Trust Behavioural and Clinical Neuroscience Institute, University of Cambridge. She is internationally recognised as a leader in the fields of cognitive psychopharmacology, neuroethics, neuropsychology, and neuropsychiatry. She has over 300 publications covering these topics in various journals including Science, Nature Neuroscience, The Lancet, British Medical Journal, Archives of General Psychiatry, American Journal of Psychiatry, Biological Psychiatry, The Journal of Neuroscience, Brain, Psychopharmacology, and Psychological Medicine. In recognition of her achievements in the field of cognitive neuroscience she was elected a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 2004.

; http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01rv8dv) where she was speaking about her new book ‘Bad Moves. How decision making goes wrong and the ethics of smart drugs’ which is co-authored with Nicole Jamie Labuzetta and published by Oxford University Press this month.
