Personal Biography

I am a registered Health Psychologist and Chartered Psychologist. I completed my MSc in Health Psychology and my PhD at the University of Southampton. My PhD was funded by an ESRC Case studentship and the Ménière’s Society. Following my PhD I worked as a lecturer in the School of Health Professions at the University of Southampton where I continued with my research and taught the psychology of health and illness. I joined Brunel University in 2008 and, with my co-director, set up a MSc in Psychology, Health, & Behaviour.

Research

Research Overview

As a Health Psychologist my areas of research are broad. My main research area is adjustment to chronic illness and exploring factors which may influence this process. I am interested in the role of social comparison as this is something we all do and yet we understand little about the effects. I am also currently looking in to the role of the experience of stigma. I have carried out studies in various illness or disability groups, for example, Ménière’s disease, spinal cord injury, HIV, early memory loss, and COPD. I am also currently involved with a study looking at weight loss in people who are overweight and obese. I use both qualitative and quantitative methods to carry out my research.
