Personal Biography
I completed my MRC-funded PhD studies in 1991 at the MRC/ESRC Social and Applied Psychology Unit, Sheffield, and continued in that Unit as a post-doc investigating age and cognition until 1995. I served as a Lecturer and Senior Lecturer in Psychology at Goldsmiths, University of London, until 2005 when I was appointed Professor of Psychology at Brunel. Since then I have served as Head of Psychology, am a Director (Cognitive Ageing) of the Brunel Institute of Ageing Studies, and am a Leverhulme Research Fellow (2010 - 2012).
Research
Research Overview
I am a cognitive neuropsychologist primarily interested in age, cognition and dementia. My research falls in to three main areas:
1) The early detection of age-related cognitive decline and dementia, where work assesses a broad range of variables (e.g. genetic, MRI, lifestyle) and seeks to identify early markers of age-related neuropsychological decline.
2) I also use experimental methods to investigate the cognitive processes underpinning age differences in memory and attention, and the interface between cognitive function and everyday skills such as driving and work performance.
3) Additionally, work looks at the association between anxiety, depression and cognition in old age.
