Centre for Biomedicine & Society (CBAS)
The Centre for Biomedicine & Society (CBAS) is a leading international centre for theoretically insightful, empirically rich and policy relevant social science research on the interactions between Medicine, Science & Society. Our interdisciplinary research programme combines Medical Sociology and Science Studies in novel ways to explore the ‘biomedical and bioscience revolutions’ in fields such as stem cells and forensics.
Our main focus is on Sociology & Science & Technology Studies (STS) of the Biosciences and Medicine. However, we are developing three new broad areas of research and teaching that examine the social worlds of: 1. Science & Technology; 2. Health; and 3. the History of the Social Sciences. All of our research and teaching is informed by a ‘sociological imagination’ that seeks to examine the social practices, social shaping and social implications of the areas we study.
Aims of CBAS
- To promote and facilitate sociological research on the science/medicine interface
- To maintain a broad research and teaching agenda that links our key interests in biomedicine with wider issues in science and technology; and in health
- To contribute to debates relevant to policy makers and practitioners
- To provide expert mentoring, training and research skills for research students and junior academics
- To teach innovative Masters programmes, for example, our MSc Medicine, Bioscience & Society
- To teach linked undergraduate modules such as our 3rd Yr option, Sociology of Health & Illness
