Impact
CBAS members are consulted by policy makers on topics in the field of biomedicine and bioscience. CBAS workshops and conferences promote public debate and dialogue between academics, user groups, and policy makers. Recent events include: Academy-Industry Interactions in Stem Cell Research; Restricted Consent for Embryo Donation; Crime, Science and Society: Forensic DNA Profiling; Governing Genomics: Key issues and Debates; and Interdisciplinary Approaches to Bioethics.
CBAS academics are involved in running several academic journals. Our roles include: Editors of Sociology of Health & Illness, a leading international journal, ranked 5/114 in Sociology (Williams & Wainwright). Editorial Board membership includes: New Genetics & Society (Prainsack); Science as Culture (Prainsack); Journal of the Knowledge Economy (Prainsack); Personalized Medicine (Prainsack); Journal of Bioethical Inquiry (Wainwright); Clinical Ethics (Williams).
The Centre’s policy engagement strategy is supported by staff membership of: National Austrian Bioethics Commission (Prainsack). Membership of grant review/interview panels includesEU Framework Programme ESF COST (Williams & Prainsack); Austrian National Genome Research Programme (Wainwright); Department of Health NIHR Career Awards (Williams);Wellcome Trust Bimedical Ethics Programme Panel (Williams), and via our International Visiting Professorships atGoethe University Frankfurt, Germany (Prainsack); and the University of Sydney, Australia (Williams & Wainwright). Prainsack was recently appointed Chair of the Scientific Committee of the new European Science Foundation’s (ESF) Forward Look in Personalised Medicine. We work with a range of Brunel University Research Centres, for example, with the Magna Carta Institute to help deliver policy and public engagement.
