Personal Biography
My first post was at the University of Leicester as a lecturer in employment studies at the Centre for Labour Market Studies in 1996. There I taught courses related to human resource management and training, and developed an interest in figurational sociology. I joined Brunel in 2006 in the Business School, again teaching courses related to business and management, but ‘smuggling in’ my interests in sociology! I later moved to Sociology & Communications at Brunel, where I now teach and research in relation to diverse range of topics. I have also been centrally involved in the management of the School of Social Sciences. I am currently Deputy Head of School for Development and External Relations – a role that gives me responsibility for developing academic partnerships with other institutions, and developing links with external bodies. In addition, I have previously worked as Deputy Head of School for Learning and Teaching, and Deputy Head of School for Taught Postgraduate Studies.
Research
Research Overview
My research interests relate to four central, overlapping, areas: organisational/industrial sociology; the sociology of emotions; the sociology of the body and health; and sociological theory. More specifically, I am interested in: emotional reflexivity, emotional labour, and emotional intelligence; leisure commodities (particularly tobacco); addiction; work and identity; the history of sociology/historical sociology; and figurational sociology. My first book, Learning to Smoke (Chicago Press, 2003) won the 2006 Norbert Elias prize (hear interview on Radio 4's Thinking Allowed). More recently, I have published on such topics as communities of practice, ‘dirty work’, moral panics, and the sociology of Norbert Elias.
