Department: Department of Computer Science
College: College of Engineering, Design and Physical Sciences
After researching several universities, I chose Brunel because of the course content and the location – close to London and Heathrow. This specific course appealed to me as I have always been interested in computers - I used to enjoy taking them apart as a kid! The course seemed right up my street.
Brunel’s facilities are excellent. I found the 24-hour labs extremely helpful – especially when I had some great ideas at 2am! The teaching staff are extremely supportive and helped me adjust to the education style in the UK, which is very different to what I was used to in India.
I did my placement at Symantec, a software company. It was a fantastic learning experience, which helped me put the theoretical skills I learned in the classroom into practice. I also developed soft skills, such as communication and teamwork. It was an extremely valuable experience and helped me decide which career path to follow. I believe the course would not have been complete without this experience.
We had the opportunity to do a lot of practical work on the course. For my Final Year Project, I made a Finch robot play football using an Android device. It was an interesting topic and a lot of fun to work on. I entered this project into the Made in Brunel, Software Innovation showcase, and won the ‘Project Innovation’ prize from FDM Group, which gave me great material to talk about in job interviews.
With support from Brunel’s Placement and Careers Centre, I quickly found a job on a graduate scheme with AKQA (a digital media agency).
