My first placement was at The Royal London hospital in acute paediatrics. Over the six weeks I spent there, I worked mainly on the respiratory wards, focussing particularly on children with cystic fibrosis. It was a fantastic experience and, despite the hard work, I loved every day of it.
The teaching from the level one Respiratory module gave me a great knowledge base for the placement, so I was able to start with a good understanding of respiratory anatomy, physiology, assessment and treatment methods, and the placement allowed me to put this theory into practice (as well as adding to it!).
I really valued this placement as I was also able to spend some time with orthopaedic and neuro-rehabilitation patients within the paediatric department, which gave me an even wider view of the role of the physiotherapist in an inpatient environment.
