I have spent six weeks in the Carvel Rehabilitation Unit (an elder rehab unit) at the Whittington Hospital as my first clinical placement. It was such an amazing experience working with the therapy team and the placement gave me a great opportunity to transfer and apply the knowledge I have learnt in theoretical modules such as Rehab One & Two, Musculoskeletal, respiratory and neuro-rehabilitation to the 'real' patients.

Carvel Rehabilitation unit is a specific ward treating elderly patients who have had orthopaedic surgery after having had a fracture or a history of falling. This placement also gave me the opportunity to take part in several home-visits with the Occupational Therapists to see what kind of adaptations should be put in place to reduce the risk of future falls in preparation for the patient’s discharge.

After this placement, I realised that patience and simplification of language are critical to effective communication with the elderly. For my next placement, I would like to have the challenge of working in a Musculoskeletal clinic which has been the module that I have found most challenging since year one.
