About the course
This new course equips you with the essential knowledge and skills to design modern day conventional and renewable energy plants and components – and to understand their environmental and economic impact.
The programme focuses on the aspects of mechanical engineering principles that underlie how energy is generated, supplied and used – through engineering design, complex fluid flow and heat transfer, and the operation of energy technologies and systems including renewables.
The course offers professional development and valuable work placement opportunities with leading energy companies, with a major individual project required in your final year.

Renewable energy is the future for sustaining our planet and innovative engineering will be behind it's success.
This course will give you the expertise in technical design, system operation and enviro-economic analysis to allow you to play a leading role within the renewable energy industry, and be an effective, resourceful decision maker. You will study modern day coal, oil and gas systems and solar, wind, biomass and non-conventional fossil fuelled systems to understand all aspects of their design and operation in complex situations.
From jet aircraft to air conditioning plant, tunnelling machines to body-scanners, technical consultancy to financial services such as insurance, mechanical engineers deal with the design and production of the machines, systems and structures that are taken for granted in the modern world. Interacting with students from different specialisms and with different interests is an important part of the University experience. To help with this, we have introduced a multidisciplinary project for Level 1 students. This is a design-based competition between teams made up of students from a number of subjects.
Facts and Figures
- The UK Climate Change Act 2008 includes legally binding targets for the UK to reduce its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by at least 80% by 2050. Internationally the Kyoto Protocol has imposed similar conditions on signatory states. Methods of energy generation, sources of energy consumption, amount of energy demand and how it is delivered are understood to have a strong bearing on GHG emissions.
- Worldwide more efficient conventional power plants (including carbon capture and storage), nuclear, non-conventional fossils and renewables are being considered as viable generation alternatives. Private and public sectors are gearing up to meet this challenge with new, cleaner conventional power plants are being implemented and renewables aggressively promoted through favourable policies, such as Feed in Tariff (FiT) and Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) schemes in the UK.
- Similar incentive schemes are being run in Spain, Germany, USA, India, Brazil and China among many other nations. Developing countries in Africa, Asia, South America and elsewhere are constructing new power infrastructure whilst overhauling the existing ones requiring advice on technical design, feasibility studies and enviro-economic analysis from energy consultancy companies. It is expected that graduates from this course will be suitable for and employed in these growing sectors.
Teaching and Assessment
You will be introduced to subject material, including key concepts, information and approaches, through a mixture of standard lectures and seminars, laboratory practicals, field work, self-study and individual research reports.
The aim is to challenge and inspire you to expand your own knowledge and understanding. Teaching is by a mixture of lectures, laboratories, design studios and one-to-one supervision.
There are written examinations in May of each year. In Level 3, all students undertake a major individual project, often with industrial support. This is worth a third of the overall marks for the year.

With international agreements to reduce greenghouse gas emissions placing more on energy saving systems, opportunities for graduates of this course exist through the world, as contributors to the challenging global energy market.
Graduates will be eligible to undertake directly supervised research, leading to the award of a Doctor of Philosophy degree (PhD) either at Brunel University or any other university in the UK or elsewhere.
Sandwich students undertake high-quality, paid work placements within prominent companies and organisations. Potential placements with top energy companies, such as Arup, British Gas, BISOL solar, British gas, Centrica, EDF energy, EoN, Hoare Lea, GE Energy, Kingspan Industries, RES and Rolls Royce, will be offered.

Entry Criteria 2016/17
- GCE A-level AAB-ABB, including Maths and Physics. Typical offer AAB to include Maths and Physics. (General Studies not accepted).
- Advanced Diploma Progression Diploma Grade A in Engineering, plus the Specialist Unit in Maths for Engineers at grade C along with 1 AS-level (excluding General Studies) at Grade B for Additional and Specialist Learning.
- BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma D*DD in Mechanical Engineering with Distinctions in Further Mathematics for Technicians and Further Mechanical Principles modules.
- BTEC Level 3 Diploma DD in Mechanical Engineering with Distinctions in Further Mathematics for Technicians and Further Mechanical Principles and A-Level at grade A in Maths.
- BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma D in a related subject with A-Levels grade AB in Maths and Physics.
- International Baccalaureate Diploma 31 points, including 6 in Higher Level Maths and 5 in Higher Level Physics.
- Access to Higher Education Diploma Complete and pass Access to Engineering course with 45 credits at Level 3, of which 30 credits must be at Distinction and 15 credits at Merit or higher. All Maths and Physics units must be Distinctions at level 3 plus A-level Maths at Grade B. Access students who are not taking A-level Maths are encouraged to apply for the Foundations of Engineering course.

5 GCSEs to include Maths at Grade B, English Language at Grade C, and Double Science (or two separate Science subjects) at Grade C or above. Other acceptable GCSEs: English Literature, Geography, History, Languages, others may be considered on an individual basis.

English Language Requirements
- IELTS: 6 (min 5.5 in all areas)
- Pearson: 51 (51 in all subscores)
- BrunELT: 60% (min 55% in all areas)
Brunel University London strongly recommends that if you will require a Tier 4 visa, you sit your IELTS test at a test centre that has been approved by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) as being a provider of a Secure English Language Test (SELT). Not all test centres have this status. The University can accept IELTS (with the required scores) taken at any official test centre or other English Language qualifications we accept as meeting our main award entry requirements.
However, if you wish to undertake a Pre-sessional English course to further improve your English prior to the start of your degree course, you must sit the test at an approved SELT provider. This is because you will only be able to apply for a Tier 4 student visa to undertake a Pre-sessional English course if you hold a SELT from a UKVI approved test centre.
