About Jack
Professor Silver obtained his Chemistry BSc in 1970 and PhD in 1973, both from the University of London. He held postdoctoral fellowships at Chelsea College (1973-74) and Imperial College London (1974-75), and lectureships in Chemistry at the University of Birmingham (1975-76), the University of the West Indies (1976-77) and the University of Essex (1978-1988). At the latter he was made a Senior Lecturer in 1988 and a Reader in 1992 before moving to the University of Greenwich in 1996, becoming a Professor in the Schools of Chemical and Life Sciences until 2002, when he became a Professor in the School of Science. From 1997-2003 he was Director of the Materials Research Group. In January 2006 Professor Silver joined the Wolfson Centre for Materials processing as Executive Director.
Research
Research Interests
Nanophosphors, photoluminescent materials, inorganic and organometallic materials, Mössbauer Spectroscopy.
Research Activity
Professor Silver’s current research interests are the synthesis, characterisation and processing of novel inorganic and polymer materials. His work on phosphors and display materials encompasses photoluminescence and cathodoluminescence for fluorescent lighting applications, electroluminescence for use in displays and infra-red emitting phosphors for military applications.
External Activities
Professor Silver became a Chartered Chemist of the Royal Society of Chemistry in 1982 and a Fellow in 1987. In 1992 he was awarded a Doctorate of Science (DSc.) from the University of London in recognition of his work as a world authority in the fields of inorganic, bio-inorganic and organometallic chemistry.
