Background
I have a BA in Experimental
Psychology from the University of Oxford and an MSc in Work Design and
Ergonomics from the University of Birmingham. My PhD entitled
"Modelling Dialogues for Interactive Speech Systems" is also from the
University of Birmingham.
I am currently a Reader in
the Department of Information Systems and Computing at Brunel University and
Director of the Graduate School. Before this I worked at the School of Computer Science and Information
Technology at the University of Nottingham, where I was a lecturer in Human
Factors.
Research
My research centres on the
human aspects of computing. I am interested in the design of usable
interfaces for computer systems, particularly those using recognition
technology. I have done most of my research on the design and use of
systems using speech recognition technology. I am also interested in the
human factors issues of 'affective' or emotional computing. An EPSRC funded
research project started in October 2002 to investigate how giving computers
the ability to recognise human emotions might contribute to human-computer
interaction (EPSRC grant ref: GR/R81374/01).
Teaching
I am available as a
supervisor for Masters Dissertations and Final Year Projects in the Department of
Information Systems and Computing.
Consultancy
I am available for Human
Factors consultancy work through Brunel University's Research Support and
Development office. Past projects include:
- advising a 'Voice-Portal' start-up company
on the application of human factors in the design of spoken human-computer
dialogues
- reviewing the usability of a mobile
medical device interface for a major UK manufacturer
- training on designing usable spoken
language dialogues to an automated voice solution provider
My research expertise is in
the area of dialogue design for speech systems. I am also very interested in
usability assessment, particularly for spoken language systems (using speech
recognition and/or text-to-speech).
