Proposals for final year projects
1. Installation of a Wireless LAN in the refectory to support mobile computing while in that area.
2. Installation of a Wireless LAN in the Library to support mobile computing while in that area.
3. Installation of a Wireless LAN in the Department of E+CE to support mobile computing while in that area.
4. Investigation on the security and privacy issues of the above projects.
5. Using IPSec to further secure IEEE 802.11b.
6. Modelling Wireless LAN behaviour using OPNET.
7. Roaming capabilities of IEEE 802.11b Wireless LAN.
The above are just initial suggestions open for discussion.
The minimum hardware requirement for all of the above
(assuming that the same hardware can be used by more than one student),
is about 2000 pounds and should include at least 2 Access Points and 3
PCMCIA client cards. Students are going to be requested to use their own
laptop computers.
Although Cisco is probably the best choice, other cheaper
devices could also be used. If the Department decides to go with that,
I would be more than happy to expand in detail all of the above and to
provide you with specific types and models of the hardware required.
