Proposals for final year projects

    Prof. Y. H. Song

1. Comparison studies of neural network based predictors for pricing estimation.

Brief description: Accurate pricing estimation in electricity markets can bring obvious benefits to the part concerned.  The project is to make a comparison of various neural network based predictors to perform the task in terms of accuracy, speed and robustness.

2. Condition Monitoring and fault detection using Wavelet analysis.

Brief description: Electrical plants are subject to various abnormal conditions, which may cause some faults.  Such phenomena can be reflected by some measured signals.  The project is to apply wavelet transform to capture some characteristics of these events so as to monitor plant condition and detect any possible faults.

3. Simulation studies of power electronics devices used in power system control.

Brief description: Power electronics based devices have been developed in power systems to improve system security, quality and so on.  It is important to understand the interaction of devices with the system.  The project is to use Electromagnetic Transient Program (EMTP) to study the functions and control of some newly developed power electronic devices.

The above three projects all are challenging in some aspects. Willing to learn new knowledge is essential.
