Remit

This working group aims to review and update the physics potentials of ATLAS and CMS

Topics

  1. Single W (Z) production in connection of measuring MW and sin2 thetaW
  2. Gauge-boson pair production
  3. WW/WZ/ZZ scattering at high energies
  4. Tau-pair production (also in assocation with jets and gauge bosons)
  5. Effective Field Theory without a Higgs

Single W (Z) production

Electroweak and QED corrections for resonant W (Z). Treatment of bremsstrahlung and QED evolution of parton distributions. Implications for precision measurements of MW cross-sections, AFB and  sin2(thetaW)
QCD corrections give the dominating theoretical uncertainty for the measurement of MW. We consider pt and Mt distributions, pt and resummation predictions for W/Z ratio. Investigation of the best parton-level programs and a comparison with PYTHIA and HERWIG.

VV pair production

SM processes qq_bar --> VV and gg --> VV with 0,1, 2 ... jets. Anomalous triple and quartic couplings analysis. Inclusive production of WW, WZ, ZZ, W+gamma and Z+gamma in NLO QCD. 4-lepton, 2-lepton plus photon and 2-lepton 2-jet final states. Various lepton-lepton and lepton-jet correlations. Exisiting parton-level Monte Carlo generators will be reviewed and compared with PYTHIA and HERWIG

VV scattering at high energies

Higgs mass dependence, NLO electro-weak and QCD corrections. All important final states obtained via WW, WZ and ZZ scattering will be considered. Gauge boson pair production with forward jet tagging will be studied here. Review of Monte Carlo generators and a comparison with PYTHIA and HERWIG.

Tau-pair production

Higgs production and other new particles signal may be observable with the help of the physics signal of the production of tau-pairs. All relevant SM productoin mechanisms will be review and updated.

Effective Field Theory (EFT) without a Higgs

Description of EW phenomenology in terms of an EFT, constraints from LEP and their implications for LHC processes

Dates and agendas

The first group meeting was held on Friday 22 January 1999
The second group meeting has been arranged for Wednesday 14 April 1999 (Bat.4 Theory Seminar Room)

Documents

The agenda of the first meeting is now available. Copies of the transparencies of the talks given are linked to from the agenda.

List of Participants

A list of people is available. Note that this will change quite often!

Generators

A list of specialised event generators is being compiled.
