Biography

Sergeant Observer Lawrence Edward Victor Webb graduated from Shoreditch College in 1940. Upon joining the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve he was assigned to the 101st Squadron. On 20th March, 1943 Sgt Webb and his crew of eight were testing the guns of their Lancaster ED446 in low flying conditions. On one of the passes over Atwick Beach the aircraft hit a concrete pill-box causing the aircraft to breakup and crash on the cliffs and beach. Only the air gunner survived. Sgt Webb is buried at Brandesburton (St. Mary) Churchyard. His headstone reads, He will meet us, Smiling a welcome, At the gates, Of eternal peace. [sic]
