Civil & Environmental Engineering research at Brunel University involves interdisciplinary activities where key aspects of engineering play fundamental role in the success for bridging the gap between the academia and industry.

Our department has strong links with the industry where their research and development needs have well-established records of research excellence.

Sustainability lies at the heart of the our department ethos, embedding a ‘cradle-to-cradle (C2C)’approach being called for today by major national and international engineering organisations. Our recently revitalised technical facility, the Joseph Bazalgette Laboratories and Joseph Lowe Research Centre, hands our students and researchers the latest technologies for developing and testing innovative materials – and even highly original designs and large-scale structures. Outside links also mean opportunities to develop expertise off-campus, such as through site investigation and design.

Research Groups

These centres and groups provide interdisciplinary, collaborative and cross-cutting research platforms. These platforms support and complement our work on global challenges in health, environment, energy and manufacturing.

Nano-Cellulose & Bio-Composites (NCBC)
Waste Management & Valorisation (WasteValue)
Pavement & Ground Engineering Research Group (PAGE)
Steel and Composite Structures Research Group
Additive Manufacturing Technology in Construction (AMTC)
Coastal Engineering and Resilience LAB (CERLAB)

Research Institutes

Many of our academics are also members of the following institutes:

Institute of Energy Futures
Institute of Environment, Health and Societies
Institute of Materials and Manufacturing

Research Projects

Academics in Brunel’s Civil Engineering department are involved in many high-profile national and international research projects. Here are some of our civil engineering projects that are ongoing or have been completed.

Related PhD courses

You are very welcome to undertake your PhD or MPhil in one of our research areas and work alongside our researchers. As a research student you'll benefit from the latest work by internationally-renowned academics and the support of our Graduate School. Many of our research initiatives involve successful collaborations with industry, the public sector, business and government, both in the UK and overseas. We have many funded and non-funded research degree opportunities available. For more information, visit our Research Degrees homepage.

Our funded studentships become available at different times of the year. Please keep checking our page regularly to see the latest funded opportunities. We also advertise all our funded studentships as soon as they become available on the @BrunelResearch twitter account.
