The University of Cambridge Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults has long been recognized as a first-class introduction to the English teaching profession. It is intended for those wishing to enter the profession or those with little teaching experience who wish to extend their knowledge of teaching. It is regarded highly by employers who value the practical emphasis of the course and it has enabled many successful candidates to obtain their first teaching position or improve their career prospects within their own institution.
The qualification gives you:
Recognition as a qualified English teacher both in Britain and worldwide
- A knowledge of the English language, its grammar, phonology and lexis
- Up to date methodology of language teaching to adults (i.e. age 16+)
- A basis for later study at Cambridge English DELTA level
The CELTA programme, as laid out by Cambridge English, is designed to equip teachers with the necessary skills to operate effectively in a variety of ELT contexts and must include:
- A minimum of 106 contact hours between the candidates and course tutors which involves input, tutorial support, supervised lesson planning, feedback and peer observation
- Six hours assessed teaching practice supervised by a course tutor
- Six hours directed observation of live lessons taught by experienced ELT professionals.
- A minimum of fifty additional hours for reading, research and assignment writing and lesson preparation.
Specifically, the CELTA programme is designed to enable candidates to:
- Develop an awareness of language and a knowledge of the description of English and apply these in their professional practices.
- Develop an initial understanding of the contexts within which adults learn English, their motivations and the roles of teachers and learners.
- Develop familiarity with the principles and practices of effective teaching to adult learners of English.
- Develop basic skills for teaching adults in the language classroom.
- Develop familiarity with appropriate resources and materials for use with adult learners of English for teaching, testing, and for reference.
- Identify opportunities for their own future development as professionals in the field.

Teaching takes place Monday to Friday, 9.30am to 5.45pm
The syllabus is covered through seminars, workshops, interactive lectures and includes specifically:
A - Input Sessions
- English grammatical structures and their functions
- The teaching of lexis, pronunciation & discourse
- Error analysis and correction
- Current teaching methods
- Classroom management
- The learner, the teacher & the teaching/ learning context
- Effective lesson planning & preparation
- Classroom resources and textbooks
- Brief study of a modern language
B - Teaching Practice
All trainees are required to teach a minimum of six hours of assessed teaching practice. At Brunel Language Centre, candidates will teach students at two distinct levels: Elementary and Intermediate. Candidates are required to submit a lesson plan and a copy of all materials used to the course tutor before the lesson. Following teaching practice, candidates must write a self-evaluation of their lesson which is used as a basis for feedback given by the course tutor and other CELTA candidates. Candidates will receive a written assessment of their lesson from the course tutor.
C - Supervised Lesson Preparation
The day before each teaching practice session, candidates have the opportunity to discuss their proposed lesson plans and materials with a course tutor. This enables the candidate to receive support, guidance and feedback before the supervised/assessed teaching practice sessions and make any suggested adjustments.
D - Written Assignments
Candidates are required to complete four assignments to be submitted by given deadlines throughout the course. These are extremely practical and focus on four different aspects of teaching and learning a language:
1. Language Analysis: A study of different areas of the English language system.
2. A Case Study of a Learner: A detailed study and analysis of student's language and language skills.
3. Materials Evaluation: An appreciation of materials used in ELT.
4. Reflections on Classroom Practice: A collation of what has been learned from teaching practice, peer observation and observations of «live» lessons taught by experienced ELT professionals.
E - Tutorials
There are two tutorials within the course (Weeks Two and Three) in which the candidate and a course tutor jointly evaluate progress in all aspects of the course and set out recommendations for the remainder of the course.
1. Candidates are assessed continuously throughout the course in ALL aspects of the course and specifically: teaching practice, written assignments, capacity for self-evaluation, the ability to develop and work as a teacher which includes professionalism, attendance, punctuality, liaising and working with colleagues.
2. Candidates are required to maintain a portfolio throughout the course which includes: lesson plans and materials, self-evaluations, tutors feedback on teaching practice, written assignments and a Candidate Record Booklet. This must be submitted for assessment to the external assessor appointed by Cambridge English and to the centre for the final assessment.
3. The final grade issued to a candidate is agreed unanimously by all the course tutors and the external assessor appointed by Cambridge English.
4. Successful candidates will receive a CELTA certificate with one of the following Grades: A, B or C. Other candidates will receive a letter from Cambridge English.
5. Results and certificates are normally issued 3 months after course completion.
6. Brunel Language Centre provides all candidates with a CELTA report which can be used as a reference for future employers or for further training courses.
Quality Assurance
All centres which offer CELTA courses are required to submit a training plan, timetable, details of assessment and assignments to Cambridge English in order to become validated. All CELTA course tutors must be approved by Cambridge English and each centre/CELTA course is assessed by an external assessor appointed by Cambridge English concerning the course provision, training and assessment.
The Cambridge English regulations state that all candidates must:
- Be at least 18 years old by the end of the course
- Have an awareness of language and a competence in English, both written and spoken, that enables them to undertake the course
- Have the potential to develop the necessary skills to become effective teachers and to successfully complete the written assignments of practice teaching.
All candidates are required to complete 100% attendance and therefore should ensure that they are free of all commitments for the duration of the course.
Due to the intensive nature of the course it is unsuitable for those who are suffering from stress and/or who have recently undergone traumatic experiences. Candidates who are receiving medical treatment should consult their doctor before applying and indicate this on the application form.

2. Please note that places are strictly limited to twelve participants per course and that applications should be received by 19th June 2017. It is also essential that all course fees are paid in full 4 weeks prior to course commencement. Late applications will be dealt with on an individual basis.
4.On receipt of the above, the CELTA Course Director will contact shortlisted candidates to arrange an interview. Those living some distance from London can arrange a Skype interview. All other candidates will be notified.
5. Following the interview, candidates will be notified as to course acceptance/rejection. Brunel Language Centre cannot enter into correspondence as to reasons why candidates are not accepted for the course. The decision of the CELTA Course Director, Brunel Language Centre, is final.
6. Candidates accepted on the CELTA course should then notify Brunel Language Centre of their intention to accept the place and pay a deposit of £200 to Brunel Language Centre. Places can only be guaranteed to those who have paid a deposit.
7. All course fees must be paid in full 4 weeks before course start date. Late applications will be dealt with on an individual basis.
Cancellation
The following cancellation fees apply to all CELTA courses:
Cancellation prior to the start date of the course: £ 200 deposit On or after course date: 100 % of course fees In the case of a student wishing to defer, any course fees paid will be transferred to the new start date.
N.B. Brunel Language Centre reserves the right to cancel the above-mentioned course. In the event of cancellation by Brunel Language Centre, 100% of the total fees paid will be refunded. In the event of Force Majeur, 100% of the total fees paid will be refunded. Under no circumstances will travel or other such costs incurred be reimbursed.
