Welcome to Journalism
Careers in journalism are dynamic, creative and highly competitive. There is an increasing need for well-qualified entrants who are equipped to be effective practitioners within a rapidly changing and converging media environment. Journalism at Brunel offers exciting degrees that address the current needs of industry through a rigorous grounding in the fundamentals – writing, reporting, sourcing and solid editorial judgement. We also equip every student with multi-platform skills to help you adapt to future developments in the field.
But we also aim to provide the bigger picture:
- What is happening to journalism and why?
- Is that story legally dangerous?
- How do journalists cope with spin?
Our courses are distinctive in allowing you to develop your own professional practice while also learning about the impact of technological change, cultural developments and political issues on different forms of journalism.
You will be taught by a team of academics based at Brunel, who have considerable professional experience, as well as visiting lecturers and legal experts working in key positions within the media industries. We are unique in having a fully integrated team of practitioner-academics, as opposed to having separate academic and skills-based departments. Our teaching team are all engaged with the latest research in the field, as well as media studies and cultural theory.
You will benefit from the School's excellent links with broadcasting, publishing and online industries, and will be offered the opportunity for work placement. As well as writing for our in-house intranet and other university media, our students contribute to real-world media. Brunel students cover a significant local beat for the Uxbridge Gazette and are regular contributors to Hayes FM. In addition, many of our students have undertaken placements at national media organisations, including BBC News and The Sun.
Best of all, we recruit small cohorts of students to ensure plenty of direct contact with tutors, and we pay close attention to personal development. As the course combines scholarly excellence with professional standards, we strongly believe that a diverse student cohort will benefit everyone involved. Therefore, we aim to recruit students from a wide range of backgrounds with a variety of interests.
We encourage international students are to apply for scholarships through Brunel International Scholarships.
