Reg and Joyce Carpenter
Carpenter Collection Down by the sea
Carpenter Collection BP Tanker model
Reg (Reginald) Carpenter (1920-1993) was a civil servant and Royal Navy reservist, who served at sea during the Second World War. He had a lifelong interest in shipping and was an expert ship modeller. He collected his library over many years, scouring second hand bookshops for specific books on naval or maritime history. He wrote numerous articles for modelling magazine, the merchant ship section of The Dumpy Pocket Book of Shops, (London: Sampson Low, Marston, 1961), Modern Ships, (Hemel Hempstead: Model and Allied Publicationgs, 1970) and Container Shops, (Hemel Hempstead: MAP, 1971). A number of his models are superbly illustrated in Model Ships, by Toby Wrigley, (London: Orbis Books, 1971).
Find out more about his life, paintings, books and model ships in our blog post Introducing the Carpenter Collection.
