Mechanical Engineering postgraduate partnerships

Further your Mechanical Engineering career by studying at an industry-led postgraduate education centre

The National Structural Integrity Research Centre (NSIRC) is a dedicated research facility embedded within The Welding Institute’s (TWI) headquarters. TWI is a research and technology organisation, with expertise in materials joining and engineering processes as applied in industry.

Your learning is enhanced by studying on-site in a professional environment, and you will receive the following:

  • Access to joint testing facilities across Brunel and TWI, which includes mechanical and fatigue testing under different environmental conditions and NDT capability, together with access to 4D tomography and microscopy facilities
  • Networking – NSIRC is embedded within research and technology organisation TWI, which employs hundreds of engineers and scientists. Working alongside them, and with TWI’s clients, will provide exceptional networking opportunities and direct access to experiences and opportunities in the industry
  • If you’re studying on the Structural Integrity course you’ll gain access to industry-standard commercial software including SIMULIA Abaqus, MATLAB and TWI-developed packages including CrackWISE (fracture and fatigue assessment) and IntegriWISE (fitness-for-service assessment for ageing equipment)
  • If you’re studying on the Oil and Gas course there’ll be additions to the staffing on the course, giving you a richer student experience and access to a greater breadth of knowledge, and there will be amble opportunities to get hands-on with the millions of pounds worth of advance lab equipment NSIRC uses to provide services to companies in the oil and gas sector.
