Comedy Studies Research seminar: Comedy, Censorship and Parliament

This year the Centre for Comedy Studies Research is running a seminar series entitled ‘Beyond a Joke': Comedy, Censorship and Free Speech. Our first event is a seminar on Comedy, Censorship and Parliament, which addresses a number of questions and hotly debated by a panel of experts. Chaired by Brunel's Simon Weaver, Senior Lecturer in Media and Communications, speakers so far confirmed include:

Justin Fisher: is Professor of Political Science and Head of the Department of Social & Political Sciences at Brunel University London. He has directed externally-funded studies of campaigning at every general election since 2005 and has published widely on elections, campaigning, political parties and political finance.

Sarah Ilott: is Senior Lecturer in English Literature and Film at Manchester Metropolitan University. She has published widely on the politics of comedy including Comedy and the Politics of Representation Mocking the Weak (2018, co-edited with H. Davies).

Martin Rowson: is a multi-award winning cartoonist, writer and broadcaster. His cartoons have appeared in newspaper and magazines across the globe. He holds an honorary fellowship from Goldsmiths University of London and an honorary doctorate from the University of Westminster, London.

Sajeela Kershi is a multi-award winning comedian/satirist, writer, compere, actor and activist. She has performed across the UK and internationally. She has contributed and writes for various BBC Radio, has appeared on Comedy Central, ITV's Comedy Cuts and BBC Asian Network comedy on demand. She was voted Huffington Post's top funny women to follow on twitter. Has been described by the Times as 'Smart, funny, with a mischievous glint'. Themes of politics, Feminism, culture, race, religion, identity are the cornerstones of her work for which she has won numerous awards and accolades -  including the AWA Asian women of achievement award (Arts and Culture), Argos Award for artistic excellence and ITV's Asian Media award finalist.
