Let’s talk about race equality in HE

Join Sanchia Alasia and the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion team for a frank discussion on white privilege on 22 June.

Despite many attempts to address racism at university fewer than 1% of professors employed at UK universities are black and there were no black staff in the most senior levels of leadership in British universities in 2018-19.

Sanchia Alasia and our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion team will host this panel discussion to cover how we can ever make universities anti-racist and the impact of initiatives to address race equality such as the Diversifying Leadership programme, a management programme for BAME employees.

Sanchia will be joined by:

  • Professor Paul Miller, formerly at Brunel, Paul is now Head of the School of Education at the University of Greenwich. He is the UK's first black professor of educational leadership and has written significantly on the racism faced by overseas trained teachers and teachers of BAME heritage in England.
  • Professor Udy Archibong MBE, Professor of Diversity at the University of Bradford, UK, where she directs the Centre for Inclusion and Diversity and provides strategic oversight for equality and diversity across the institution. Udy’s research and teaching cover the areas of workforce diversity, diversity competent leadership development and she will be talking about the impact of the diversifying leadership programme.
  • Lord Simon Woolley, the founder and director of Operation Black Vote and the Advisory Chair of the Government of the United Kingdom Race Disparity Unit. Lord Woolley has been a crossbench member of the House of Lords since October 2019 and will provide an update on the work of the race disparity unit.
  • Dr Gulce Ipek, our equality and diversity officer, Gulce leads on the work of gender and race equality.  Her research has spanned the business case for diversity and white privilege.
