Recent Brunel industrial design graduate Cara O’Sullivan has scooped £35,000 in the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts (Nesta) Inclusive Technology Prize for her evolvable modular walking aid.

Developed in the university’s Central Research Laboratory incubator in Hays, the aid uses the same basic components which can be assembled to meet a user’s changing mobility aid needs.

In the UK alone, there are more than 4.3 million walking aid users and many find themselves having to fund different pieces of kit as their condition changes.

Now at working prototype stage, 2015 graduate Cara plans to make the aid in a variety of colour options so users can mix and match as feedback from early users showed people wanted a more stylish aid rather than dull grey ones.

Further details of Cara’s project can be found on the Nesta website.
