Action Tutoring - English or Maths Tutor

Details of the Charity:

Action Tutoring is an education charity delivering tutoring programmes in schools, to support disadvantaged pupils across the country.  We want to ensure these pupils are able to reach their potential through our tutoring support and help them achieve, regardless of their backgrounds.  We recognise how powerful tutoring can be in supporting a child academically and we believe it shouldn't be accessed only by those who can afford it.

The way we deliver our programmes is by recruiting volunteers as our tutors.  Through this activity our volunteers are able to develop and use a wealth of different skills and be connected to the youngest members of their community.

Details of the Volunteering Opportunity:

We’re looking for students to volunteer with us and tutor either English or Maths.  The commitment is small – an hour a week, for just over two months – and no previous experience is necessary.  The volunteering takes place on the school premises with a member of our team on hand to supervise your sessions every week. We have over 40 opportunities available across London for you to choose from.

We provide all of the workbooks and resources you’ll need to use, so you can carefully structure your tutoring.  We’ll also process your DBS check, deliver an initial induction training and give ongoing support to help you develop as a tutor.

We're looking for people who want to support pupils to succeed. Currently only 30% of young people from disadvantaged backgrounds achieve the grades needed to progress in education, employment or training, for the other 70% their options are significantly restricted.

As volunteers, you will act as positive adult role models for the pupils you support – whatever your background or experiences you can inspire ambition in them.

Skills Required:

  • We want our tutors to feel confident in the subject they are leading on, so we ideally would like you to have achieved a B or above in this subject, or similar, at A Level (or in an equivalent qualification) and have achieved, or be studying for, a degree.
  • Good communication skills and commitment are also essential to the role.
  • We do consider other qualifications and experience: experience working with young people is helpful but not essential.
  • DBS check required (provided free of charge by Brunel Volunteers)

Additional Benefits:

  • Travel expenses reimbursed (up to £5)
  • Make a difference to a young person's future - inspire ambition in them
  • Develop new and existing skills (induction training and ongoing development) e.g. interpersonal, communications, organisational, time management.
  • Valuable school-based experience
  • Connect to other members of the community
  • Meet like-minded individuals
  • Push yourself out of your comfort zone
