Cardinal Hume Centre – Charity Shop Volunteer

Details of the Charity:

The Cardinal Hume Centre in Westminster, is a charity working with homeless young people, badly housed families, refugees, asylum seekers and migrants, helping them to obtain employment and break out of the cycle of homelessness and exclusion.

The Centre offers a hostel for homeless people aged 16-25, a family centre with a playground, and after-school clubs, homework club and a holiday programme for primary school children. There are also learning services, employment support services and support and advice services in areas of debt, welfare rights, benefits and immigration.

Details of the Volunteering Opportunity:


  • Customer service on the till
  • Greeting and helping customers
  • Promoting Gift Aid and the events at the Centre
  • Replenishing the stock on the shop floor
  • Sorting donations
  • Merchandising the stock and displaying accordingly
  • Housekeeping on the shop floor and in the stock room

Time commitment:

  • Minimum of one full day (10am-4pm Mon-Fri) or two half days, for a period of at least 4 months
  • Morning shifts are 10am-2pm
  • Afternoon shifts are 12pm-4pm

Skills Required:

  • An interest in the shop, and an enthusiasm for raising money through its work
  • Good spoken English – at least Entry Level 3
  • Work as part of a team and get on with other volunteers in the shop
  • Be able to provide a friendly, high-quality service to customers
  • A commitment to equal opportunities and treating all individuals with dignity and respect
  • A willingness to help with a range of tasks and undertake tasks as requested
  • Reliability and punctuality
  • Physical fitness – able to lift bags and boxes, and to comfortably use the stairs between the shop floor and stock room
  • Ability to engage customers in the work of the Centre and its services
