Kith & Kids - Charity Shop Autism Support Volunteer
Details of the Charity:Share this
Kith & Kids’ aim is to empower families who have a son or daughter with a learning disability or autism (many also have a physical or sensory disability) to overcome their social exclusion. Founded over 50 years ago by just two sets of parents, we have grown and adapted over the years to the changing needs of families whilst maintaining the quality of our services.
Throughout the year we provide a variety of volunteer-supported projects and services, offering opportunities to learn new skills, make friends, go out and have fun. The person with a disability being the focus of our activities, we design individual needs based projects and services that provide him or her with much needed social interaction and a sense of “normal” life that most of us take for granted.
Details of the Volunteering Opportunity:
Our Employability Project
Join us at our boutique charity shop to support our service users as they build their work experience & social skills. You’ll be supporting our members with all aspects of working in a shop to build well rounded skills within the work place. Timings: Flexible, ideally a minimum of 4 hours at a time. The shop is based in Chingford Mount.
Volunteers have a fantastic opportunity to help shape our members work experience placements within the shop. You will support our members will all aspects of working in a charity shop, including using the till and customer service and spend time with them to review the skills they have learnt at the end of each shift.
What you'll do?
At the shop you will be paired with one of our members with a learning disability or autism. You'll support and encourage them to complete the job/role they have been given for that specific day and encourage them to practice their social skills by interacting with the public in a polite and friendly manner.
You will also encourage them to work as part of a team and engage socially with staff and volunteers present in the shop. You will build their confidence and encourage them to take on new challenges.
How much time?
We encourage a minimum commitment of 4 hours at a time, however the more time you spend with our members the more you get to know them and are able to better support them.
By volunteering at our shop you will also:
- Use and develop your skills
- Learn something new!
- Increase your confidence
- Meet new people and make friends
- Gain experience for (other) work
- Give something back to the community
- Do something fun and satisfying in your spare time
- Challenge yourself
What about training?
Volunteers must attend at least two training days and complete a free DBS check before you begin volunteering.
This is a great opportunity to get to know everyone at Kith & Kids: your fellow volunteers, some of our members you will be working with, and also gives the opportunity to develop some new skills and expand your knowledge in our workshops.
When do I need to come?
Volunteers must attend at least two training days and a DBS check before taking part. Please follow the training dates below:
- We'll be running face-to-face training in north London starting on 6th November with lots of other dates to choose from
In the meantime we'll be meeting volunteers online for an informal chat from 5th October onwards. Training will take place in North London - venue to be confirmed.
No specific skills or experience is necessary, just a willingness to learn and lots of enthusiasm and energy. You cannot take part until we have met you and you have taken part in some of our training sessions too.
- Free training, opportunities to develop skills – you could become a future activity coordinator or you could become a trainer
- Volunteering hours go towards the Brunel Volunteers Award
