Richmond AID - Volunteer Buddy



Details of the Charity:

Richmond Aid aim to empower disabled people in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames and surrounding areas, irrespective of their age, lifestyle or disability. They do this by providing advice and information about benefits and services, promoting independant living, and campaigning on local and national issues that affect disabled people.

Vision - A barrier-free world with empowered disabled people who have independence and a sense of self-worth.

Details of the Volunteering Opportunity:

Become a buddy to a young person with a disability in the Richmond or Kingston Borough. Help them gain greater independence in the community by travelling with them to activities of their choice both in the local area and across London. This scheme is funded by aiming high, short breaks and aims to give respite to young people and parent/carers.

Time Commitment: A minimum of 2-3 hours a fortnight with your buddy. This can be at times that work for you and is very flexible.

Skills Required:

  • A non-judgemental approach and a respect for diversity
  • You must be reliable, adaptable and confident in working with young people with a variety of disabilities and health conditions
  • To have a patient and empathetic approach
  • Good communication skills
  • Experience with young people/disabilities is great but not essential

Additional requirements:

  • Richmond AID will require a DBS  check for this role – Richmond AID will provide this
  • Volunteers are requested to provide 1 referee
  • Volunteers will be required to remain with us for a minimum period of 6 months
