The Prince's Trust - Secondary School Mentor

Details of the Charity:

The Prince's Trust's vision is that every young person should have the chance to succeed and its mission is to help young people transform their lives by developing the confidence and skills to live, learn and earn.

We have returned £1.4 billion in value to society through our help for disadvantaged young people over the last 10 years alone. Our free programmes give young people the practical and financial support they need to stabilise their lives. We help them develop key skills while boosting their confidence and motivation so they can continue to dream big.

Details of the Volunteering Opportunity:

Our Mosaic Secondary School Mentoring Programme is looking for mentors to work with groups of young people in Uxbridge and London in January. This is a unique opportunity to learn more about our Mosaic programme, to inspire and engage directly with the young people we support, and to gain valuable mentoring experience.

What’s Mosaic?

Mosaic is Prince’s Trust mentoring programme in which relatable mentors from diverse backgrounds are selected to mentor school students from disadvantaged backgrounds. The programme seeks to develop the students’ confidence, aspirations and employability via group mentoring (each mentor would support a group of four to six students).

What’s the commitment?

Mentors will need to be available to attend:

-       A 3-hour training session delivered at the University;

-       One-hour planning meeting at the school allocated;

-       Seven one-hour group mentoring sessions at the school (fortnightly), a comprehensive range mentoring resources is supplied to each mentor

Skills Required:

We are looking for volunteers with:

• Strong communication skills – able to present to large groups of young people and facilitate conversations in small groups

• Teamwork – able to work with fellow mentors to plan sessions and deliver them effectively

• Commitment – Able to commit to seven one-hour sessions over an academic term.

This programme aligns with the Prince’s Trust values – Approachable, Non-Judgmental, Inspiring, Empowering, Passionate.

The role of the mentor:

• Planning how to engage with mentees in a creative way

• Supporting the educational and personal development in young people

• Guiding young people to help them set, meet and exceed their goals in life

Additional Benefits:

All our mentors are given free training and DBS certified, and a comprehensive range mentoring resources is provided. The first two mentoring sessions are pre-planned, and for subsequent sessions you can select activities from the resources or come up with ideas within your Mentoring team. All our mentors are supported throughout the programme by the operations team, there is also the opportunity for a Work of Work visit organised by the trust through our corporate partners, also Motivational Speakers attend our programmes which we love our Mentors to be apart of.

Volunteering with the Prince’s Trust is extremely rewarding as it’s impactful on a local level, helping to breakdown barriers that our young people face so they can thrive within our society.
