Details of the Charity:

Uxbridge Library is the main cenral Library for the London Borough of Hillingdon. The library provides an extensive range of books available for loan on a vast number of subjects, online resources accessible via the website, free WiFi use, a large number of bookable computers, computer taster and practice sessions, a range of reading groups, creative writing groups, bear club for the under 5's and advice sessions and coffee mornings.

Details of the Volunteering Opportunity:

Volunteers will be asked to help with a variety of tasks, under the supervision of library staff. The exact nature of the role will vary from branch to branch.

At Uxbridge Library, their main activities are likely to include:

  • Being a visible presence near our children’s shelves, to talk to people about the Summer Reading Challenge.
  • Helping children to choose books.
  • Helping to run in-branch activities.
  • Counting prize items.
  • Collecting feedback from parents and children.
  • Preparing craft and event materials (photocopying, etc.)

This year, we would also like out volunteers to work together on a project to develop a special, one-off event for children that we can hold in the library towards the end of the holidays.

Each week, volunteers will have a group meeting (with library staff on hand to help) to work on their own idea for an exciting children’s activity. In later weeks they’ll put together the resources and plans they need for the event and in late August they will present the event to children and families in our library.
