Resources for Autism is a charity that aims to improve the lives of children and adults who are diagnosed with autism; providing practical autism-specific services and support to families.
Details of the Volunteering Opportunity:
Reach Out Mentors Role: To support an Autistic child, teenager, or young adult. Helping them to gain confidence, and new skills, reduce isolation, and become more engaged with their community.
Where:
Both face to face and virtual support
The volunteer will carry out volunteering from the family home and activities will depend on the age and the needs of the person. If appropriate for the person being supported, then opportunities for integration of virtual support
In locations across West London and Barnet
When:
Up to two hours a week, for a 6 months period
Times are flexible - weekends, weekdays (if not at school), after school, and evenings
Role:
- Develop a positive relationship between mentor and mentee
- Help with accessing ordinary spaces
- Encourage independence through positive support
- Help with planning and life skills
- Support engagement in positive activities that are relevant to the age of the person
Skills Required:
Skills and Experiences: Previous experience of working with people with additional needs is not required, we are looking for the following qualities and skills:
- Reliability and Resilience
- Enthusiasm and a creative approach to solving problems and ideas for practical activities
- A non – judgemental approach to working with others
- Effective Communication Skills and a professional approach to volunteering
- Confidence in working with new people and situations
