Hillingdon Hospital - Volunteer Response Runner

Details of the Charity:

Hillingdon Hospital is an acute and specialist services provider in North West London, close to Heathrow Airport for which we are the nearest hospital for those receiving emergency treatment. Providing the majority of services from the Trust, Hillingdon Hospital is the only acute hospital in Hillingdon with a busy Accident and Emergency, inpatients, day surgery, and outpatient clinics.

Details of the Volunteering Opportunity:

We are looking for friendly and reliable volunteers who can support our patients to offer practical and emotional support.

Volunteers will respond to direct calls for assistance to a number of key areas as required by the trust. Volunteers will be trained to respond to requests in real time situations and have the fluidity to move around according to the daily requirements from different services across the Trust.

What you will be doing

  • Acting as a runner for the wards and departments ensuring support is required where needed and in a in a timely manner
  • Meeting and greeting patients, families, visitors and staff at the hospitals main entrance – as directed by the Reception staff/ volunteer
  • When possible, offering to escort patients, families and visitors on foot to destinations
  • Pro-actively befriending patients, their relatives and visitors
  • Assisting with activity sessions, which could include arts and crafts, puzzles and crosswords
  • Assisting with the preparation and delivery of meals and beverages
  • Collecting TTAs from the Pharmacy and take to wards/discharge lounge to enable quicker patient discharge
  • Delivering and collecting supplies, notes or other required stock
  • Engaging patients whilst they wait to be seen by a health care professional
  • Taking the questionnaire to the wards and outpatient services to help gather the patient feedback
  • Running samples to labs
  • Re-stocking gel dispensers, masks, PPEs around the site
  • Delivering patient correspondence to wards (e.g. Letters for Loved Ones Communication)
  • Collecting, wiping down and returning wheelchairs
  • Answering to phone calls from relatives on the hospital wards
  • Contacting patients to remind of their coming up appointments

Location:

Hillingdon Hospital, Pield Heath Road, Uxbridge, UB8 3NN, United Kingdom

Commitment:

Volunteers are needed Monday - Friday, between 09.00-17.00

Commitment of at least one shift per week, for a minimum period of six months consecutively

Skills Required:

  • Excellent communication skills
  • Flexible and responsive – able to think on one’s feet and to change activities quickly throughout a shift
  • Patience and understanding when communicating with the public.
  • Ability to stand and walk for periods of time
  • Able to follow instructions
  • Calm and composed
  • A helpful and positive attitude
