Hillingdon Museum and Archive Service - Archive Volunteer

Details of the Charity:

We have a vast collection of historical items, including:

  • more than 3,000 museum objects, ranging from prehistoric teeth to pub signs
  • books, pamphlets, journals and articles
  • more than 2,000 maps
  • photographs, prints and paintings of places, people
  • films dating back to 1922
  • newspapers on microfilm and hardcopy
  • interviews and local music

Details of the Volunteering Opportunity:

Tasks will include repackaging and box listing with supervision and support from the archivist. Volunteers will also need to match records with previous catalogues and improve location descriptions where necessary on an Excel spreadsheet. You will be working in a small team with qualified museum and archive professionals.

The store is in the basement of the civic centre, however the archive office is in Uxbridge Library on the high street.

Volunteers will preferably be available for one afternoon / morning per week (3 hours)

Skills Required:

  • Organised and flexible, with good IT skills, good knowledge of local history would be a bonus.
  • Reasonable level of heavy lifting/ fitness required.
